In 1980, when the village of Engenheiro Coelho was elevated to the category of District of Artur Nogueira, according to state law no. 2343, signed by then-governor Paulo Salim Maluf. From that date, the municipal mayor appointed Mr. João Fávero as the first sub-mayor of the district. In the following year, the installation of the sub-mayor’s office was undertaken. During the administrations of Mayor Cláudio Alves de Menezes (Artur Nogueira) and Mariano Aparecido Franco de Oliveira (sub-mayor), the District of Engenheiro Coelho went through a period of stagnation. Only maintenance services were carried out, such as water supply, garbage collection, and street cleaning. From that time on, the residents of the district began to express their desire for political-administrative independence. After a struggle led mainly by citizens Edison and Ademir Fávero, on October 30, 1991, the city gained its own administration, with the election of its first council members and Mayor Mariano Aparecido Franco de Oliveira.
Today, the municipality’s economy is based on agriculture, especially the production of oranges, sugarcane, cassava, vegetables, etc. The city also hosts large and medium-sized industries. Among them are Louis Dreyfus, which processes concentrated orange juice for export, and IWB and Nortec, which produce plastic components and fibers for the automotive industry. The service sector is diversified, with the largest share coming from real estate activities and services provided to companies, while commerce is also growing rapidly.
